THE TEEN EXPERIENCE SERIES

There’s a lot going on in the world today and in the hearts and minds of teenagers. You may be thinking “Why am I so moody?” or “Can I cope with drinking, drugs, or sex and still be in control?”

The Teen Experience Series (Teen EX Series) is a free, informative, and interactive 45-minute online series designed especially for teens ages 15 to 19. The classes are presented by our Adolescent Health and Youth Development (AHYD) program and taught by an experienced AHYD professional. In this sequence of candid conversations, our AHYD instructor will help separate the facts from the myths that friends may commonly share.


Topics include
 Teen Pregnancy & STI/HIV Prevention, Puberty & Hygiene, Drugs & Alcohol, Healthy Relationships & Teen Dating Violence Prevention, Bullying, and Online Safety.

 

Drugs and Alcohol

Young people will get information about the latest research about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, as well as understand how substance use can impact their growing brain and body. This session will also cover essential ways to communicate with peers to resist the pressure to use, empower healthy choices and decision making.

Healthy Relationships and Teen Dating Violence Prevention

Learn how to recognize and nourish healthy relationships, and how to identify and avoid the warning signs of unhealthy and potentially violent dating relationships. Teen dating violence resources and hotline information will be provided.

Bullying

Are you being bullied—or are you the bully? Bullying isn’t just at school or in your neighborhood, but also on social media. Through this learning experience, you’ll get a deeper understanding of just how complex bullying can be and how it negatively affects both the victim and bullies. You’ll be able to recognize ways to stop bullying from happening to yourself or someone you know.

Online Safety

Brainstorm online and digital technology, and social media resources commonly used by teens and determine potentially negative and positive influences. Participants will receive a list of high-risk behaviors to avoid.

Teen Pregnancy and STI HIV Prevention

Receive information on how to reduce their risk of unplanned pregnancy and contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV by abstaining from sex, using condoms, and or birth control if they choose to have sex.  You’ll get the facts regarding teen pregnancy and STI’s.  You’ll get to discuss ways to prevent teen pregnancy and STIs/HIV and get teen health resources/websites.

Puberty and Hygiene

Focus is on physical, emotional, and social changes that occur during puberty, fertilization and how pregnancy occurs within the female anatomy, the importance of good hygiene and how to maintain good hygiene including proper handwashing. This session includes a short movie by AMAZE to reinforce important messages covered during the session.

Parental Consent Information:  Not required

Registration Information:  Participants will register in advance through the Zoom platform.  Contact information such as name, email address, and phone number will be collected through the Zoom registration process.  After registering, participants will receive a confirmation phone call and a reminder email or text containing information about joining the meeting.

Post survey- Lesson participants will receive an online post-survey via email with instructions on how to complete.
